A CHARITY that helps those who would otherwise be on their own is asking Reading for a cuppa or six.
The Mustard Tree Foundation (Reading) has launched a Lent campaign, aimed at boosting its work with those would face disadvantage, isolation and loneliness.
Those taking up the challenge will donate £3.50 a week until Easter Sunday on March 31, making a total donation of £21.
Last year, the foundation helped more than 400 people aged between 11 and 101. It provides mentors and befrienders to build relationships that they hope will reduce health and social inequalities across the town.
It has three projects: Starting Point provides mentoring and creates opportunities for young people through its team of mentors; Engage Befriending supports people who are isolated and alone with volunteer befrienders and social events; and Rahab works with the town’s sex workers.
The foundation’s CEO, Katherine Shepherd, said: “Reading is a diverse town with fascinating cultures and backgrounds, but the one thing that brings us all together is the enjoyment of a cuppa and catching up with family and friends.
“As with other charities, we are facing an increase in our running costs and a decrease in funding opportunities, so we are asking people in Reading to donate the equivalent of £3.50 per week for the six weeks leading up to Easter.”
The charity will celebrate its 20th anniversary later in the year.
