HOT ON the heels of the release of their latest single, Divorce are gearing up for the release of their debut album next year.

The band, which largely defies definition, are bringing their eclectic but emotive outlook and easy-going attitude to Reading’s Face Bar.

Vocalist Tiger Cohen-Towell says of the band: “It’s slightly genreless, though we are definitely influenced by country, chamber pop– we tend to follow what the songs need and don’t worry about genre too much.”

They explain: “As we become more and more digital, the nature of genre-based scenes and those bubbles and communities have become even more hand-picked, but also more globalised.

“There almost aren’t any subcultures in the way there used to be– people still stick to their genres, but bands increasingly move with whatever they feel represents them.”

For the band, this means looking further afield than their own origins, however.

“Our hometown of Nottingham has a pretty small scene– a great one– but when you’re isolated like that, you rely more heavily on more global influences to keep you on your toes.

“People run with whatever is available to them, which these days is pretty much everything, and for us there’s definitely a level of curiosity in that.

“We like to challenge ourselves but to make it cohesive, which doesn’t always fit with artistic instincts a lot of the time, which tend to drive you to keep evolving.

“But if you stay too comfortable, it doesn’t really feel like art at that point– most musicians do grow tired with the pressure to monetise their work.

“We try not to become stagnant, not repeat things just because people liked them before.”

But they explain that it is not development for the sake of it; it is more organic.

“But we don’t try to be edgy or hard either– we keep the focus on the lyrics, keep it informal, and just have fun with it.

“And we try to be vulnerable too; there are parts of that emotional psyche, as it were, which are angrier, of course, more angular.

“But we veer warmer, I think, as a band.”

Divorce are playing at The Face Bar from 7.30pm on Wednesday, October 9.

Divorce are also set to release their debut album, Drive to Goldenhammer, in March, with the first single from the album, All My Freaks, available to stream now.
