Simon Johnson has already begun his preparations for the new campaign as Reading City FC announced that as of the 2025/26 Dave Tarpey will serve as Assistant Manager, alongside existing Michael Butcher.
In October 2024, Dave called time on an illustrious career where he’s enjoyed three promotions, a fantastic FA Cup run in which he broke goalscoring records, and at the age of 27 achieved what every player dreams off and that’s to turn professional, having been signed by Barnet.
Since retiring, Tarps has been a part of Johnson’s backroom staff as a forward coach.
First Team Manager, Simon Johnson expresses his excitement and said: “Tarps came in to the club in November time and immediately gained respect of the squad and worked with our forward players.
“I’m delighted to promote him to assistant manager to give him an opportunity on his road into non-league management and coaching.
“He has an excellent rapport with the players and obviously fantastic experience from within the non-league and professional game. He will help to push the club to where we want to be next year and I’m also looking forward to learning from him along our journey together.
“A fantastic character to have in our changing room as an assistant manager and a born winner.”
Tarpey added: “I’m really looking forward to taking up the role and appreciate Simmy [Simon Johnson] offering me the position. “Reading City is a club that I feel is ready to kick on and aim for promotion to step 4 and I believe we are capable of that. I really enjoyed my few months coaching and helping at the club last season and cannot wait to get the new season started in a new role. I feel I can bring a lot to the squad on and off the pitch with my experience in football.
“See you all soon for hopefully an exciting and rewarding season.”
