READING Borough Council has provided the latest round of support to households to help with the cost of living.
Nearly £70,000 of vouchers has been sent out to around 3,750 homes in Reading, constituting £185 each, as well as another 261 to care leavers.
The payments are intended to help those with children who are eligible for free school meals who may be struggling to meet costs.
Low-income households were also eligible to apply for a one-off payment of a further £125 from the council’s Household Support Fund, though applications have now closed.
The fund, which totals more than £1 million, was provided by the Department of Work and Pensions for the period of April 1 to September 30, 2024.
Overall, more than £200,000 of support has been paid to residents since the scheme was introduced in May.
Cllr Liz Terry, Leader of Reading Borough Council, said: “The high cost of living means that many Reading households are still struggling to pay for everyday essential items.
“The increased demand on Council services we have experienced demonstrates the difficult circumstances many households find themselves in.
“I am pleased the Household Support Fund scheme helps provide some relief for those families and vulnerable individuals.”
Cllr Ellie Emberson, Lead Councillor for Corporate Services and Resources, said: “The Reading Household Support Fund scheme has been designed to help those Reading residents in most need.
“I would remind recipients that they have until 9 September to cash in their vouchers at a Post Office.
“It is good to see that we have also been able to provide one-off payments totalling £210,000 to help Reading residents who need extra assistance to meet the costs of food, clothing and utility bills.”
