READING Borough Council is still seeking residents’ views as part of a national review of polling stations.
The council is looking for feedback as it seeks to improve the facilities and accessibility of polling stations, with consultation closing at the end of the month.
A national review of the facilities is taking place, which happens every five years, where local authorities review polling stations and districts.
The council’s review is aiming to identify opportunities to make improvements to the amenities at polling sites, but is also looking at making them more accessible to those with mobility challenges.
Residents are also being asked about how the sites are located, and are encouraged to share suggestions for alternative sites for polling stations.
This does not affect constituency boundaries.
The council is particularly interested in hearing from individuals or groups with expertise in access for those with mobility challenges.
Following the consultation, the returning officer will make recommendations for any changes to the council, and the results of the review are due to be published in March next year.
Michael Graham, returning officer at Reading Borough Council, said: “This is an important review designed to ensure the polling places and polling stations across Reading continue to be fit-for-purpose and continue to suit the individual needs of all our electors in the years to come.
“I’d encourage everyone eligible to vote in Reading to share their feedback and suggestions for alternative sites to ensure the locations, buildings, and facilities are accessible.
“Households are also reminded to respond to the annual canvass form by 30 November, if they haven’t already, to ensure they can vote in the 2024 Local and Police and Crime Commissioner Elections.”
Maps and information relating to current electoral arrangements, as well as further information on the 2023 review are available online via reading.gov.uk.
Feedback for Reading Borough Council’s polling stations review can be submitted in person, by post, by email, or via their online response form.
Postal submissions should be addressed to Electoral Services Manager, Reading Borough Council, Civic Offices, Bridge Street, Reading, RG1 2LU.
Forms can also be collected from the Civic Offices or any of Reading Borough Council’s libraries.
Online submissions can be made via: self.reading.gov.uk or by emailing: Polling.Review@reading.gov.uk
Consultation closes on December 1.
