CARERS UK has partnered with Better leisure centres in Reading to mark six decades of support for carers.

The partnership means that members of Carers UK, or anyone in receipt of the Carers’ Allowance, can take out a membership at Better centres for a discounted rate.

Eligible customers will be able to take out a membership for £30 a month, which provides access to gyms, swimming pools, fitness classes, and health suites.

The initiative aims to raise awareness of the importance of keeping active and highlight the benefits of movement for people’s health.

Research by Carers UK found that 67% of unpaid carers said that taking part in physical activity helped them feel more connected to other people.

Operating under the Better brand, GLL is the not-for-profit social enterprise that runs Meadway Sports Centre, Palmer Park Leisure Centre and Stadium, Rivermead Leisure Centre and South Reading Lesiure Centre on behalf of Reading Borough Council.

“We recognise the vital role that carers undertake to support and improve the lives of others,” said Craig Woodward, GLL’s Partnership Manager in Reading.

“As a charitable social enterprise that works across the UK to improve local communities, GLL recognises and values people who are providing key contributions to society and their local community.

“We therefore wanted to offer better wellbeing and health opportunities for carers and our partnership with Carers UK is fundamental to driving this ambition.”

Helen Walker, Chief Executive of Carers UK, said: “We’re really pleased to see GLL supporting Carers Active April 2025 with these discounted memberships.

“Many carers find it hard to look after their own wellbeing when they’re caring for someone, but taking part in physical activity can have important health benefits – helping to decrease stress levels and connecting carers with others in their local community.”
