A BERKSHIRE resident is set to take on the London marathon in aid of a charity in Reading.

Oli FitzGerald, 40, is raising funds for Parents and Children Together (PACT), which provides support for children and families in the borough.

Oli and his wife Ruth became parents through PACT when they adopted their daughter in 2018, and Ruth has worked with PACT since 2022.

He’ll be one of five members of Team PACT tackling the 26.2-mile course around the streets of London, having raised more than £2,400 so far.

While Olie used to play football regularly, explained that he’d found training challenging, especially while balancing work and family life.

He added: “It’s been a good way to clear some of my podcast backlog.”

As for what he was most looking forward to about the event, Oli said: “The finish line–everybody that I know who has previously run the marathon has mentioned how unique the day is, being cheered on by thousands.

“It’s unlikely I ever do anything like this again so absorbing the atmosphere of the day has to be it.

” “Our family wouldn’t be what it is without the work and efforts of PACT. Our daughter is our life, so the money being raised will help others achieve the same completeness.

“Not to mention the integral community work they do locally. The amount you’re able or willing to donate doesn’t matter, it is all greatly appreciated.”

Chief executive of PACT Natausha van Vliet said: “We are delighted to have a team of incredible people representing PACT in the London Marathon.

“Not only will they be running 26.2 miles but are working hard to fundraise so that we can continue our important work supporting families, children, and women.”

PACT has been providing support for families 1911, including adoption services and support, as well as providing aid to women and children affected by domestic abuse through its Alana House and Bounce Back 4 Kids programmes.

In 2023, 170 women accessed support at Alana House, and volunteers there were awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2022–the highest award a local voluntary group can receive in the UK and equivalent to an MBE.
