Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust has announced that Chief Executive Julian Emms has been awarded an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the New Year Honours List for services to the NHS.
Expressing his gratitude, Julian said: “I am deeply honoured to receive this recognition. This award is a reflection of the incredible teamwork and dedication of all the staff at Berkshire Healthcare, whose commitment to providing the best possible care inspires me every day. It has been a privilege to serve our community and work alongside so many talented individuals.”
Julian began his NHS career in 1997 as a ward manager at Wexham Park Hospital in Slough. Demonstrating exceptional leadership and commitment, he advanced to the position of Chief Operating Officer in 2004. In 2012, following the integration of mental health services with community and physical health services in Berkshire, Julian was appointed Chief Executive Officer, a role in which he has led the Trust through significant transformations and achievements.
Julian’s career in healthcare spans over 27 years, during which he has championed numerous initiatives to enhance patient outcomes, support staff well-being, promote inclusion, as well as steering the Trust through the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Under Julian’s leadership, the Trust has reached several notable milestones:
In March 2020, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) rated Berkshire Healthcare as ‘Outstanding’ overall, with commendation for the Trust’s well-led and responsive services.
And in the last NHS National Staff Survey, the Trust achieved the highest score for staff engagement across all other NHS Trusts, reflecting a positive and supportive working environment.
Chair of the Trust, Martin Earwicker, commented: “Julian’s dedication and vision have had a profound impact on the health and well-being of countless individuals. This award is a testament to his exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment to making a difference. On behalf of everyone at Berkshire Healthcare, I extend our heartfelt congratulations to Julian on this well-deserved honour.”
