RHYMING couplets were the order of the day at a Lower Earley care home.
Residents at Austen House were keen to get involved in National Poetry Day which took place on Thursday, October 3.
It encourages people everywhere to enjoy, discover and share poetry, generating hundreds of events nationwide in celebration of poetry’s power to start conversations and bring people together.
Staff and residents at Austen House care home launched their own poetry club and hosted a discussion about residents’ favourite poems.
Then they enjoyed tea and cakes while listening to poems read aloud by the group.
Iuliana Buican, activities co-ordinator at Austen House, said: “Our residents love to write and listen to poetry, and to discuss their favourite poems, so National Poetry Day was a fantastic excuse for us all to spend the day with our noses in our favourite poetry books.”
Arturas Repkovas, general manager at the home, said: “Our residents have had a great day swapping their favourite poems and discussing what they love about them.
“It has been such a treat to immerse ourselves in the rich, evocative language of poetry – we have all found it so rewarding.”
