In a world where cultures intertwine more than ever, The Salvation Army in Reading Lower Earley is opening its doors to celebrate the rich tapestry of nationalities that make up its community.
On 7 June 2025, from 10am to 2pm, the church hall at Chalfont Close will come alive with the sights, sounds, and flavours of nations near and far during its first-ever International Day.
The event, dreamed up by a Korean couple who worship at the church, invites locals to share a piece of their heritage—whether through food, traditional dress, or a brief talk about their homeland. From Hong Kong to Zimbabwe, South Africa to the Netherlands,
attendees will have the chance to explore the world under one roof, fostering understanding and friendship across cultures.
Roelof and Tanyia Vermeulen, leaders of The Salvation Army in Reading Lower Earley, are excited to see the community come together in this unique way.
Tanya said, “This isn’t just about food or flags—it’s about connection. So many cultures make up our neighbourhood, yet we don’t always get the chance to learn each other’s stories. International Day is a way to celebrate our differences and discover what unites
us.”
Roelof added, “We’re especially grateful to our Korean friends who inspired this idea. Whether you’re from Botswana or Austria, Wales or Ireland, there’s a place for you here. We want everyone to leave feeling richer from the experience—and maybe a little fuller
from all the delicious samples!”
While the event may raise modest funds for The Salvation Army’s work, it is an opportunity for people to come along and learn about how The Salvation Army supports its diverse local community. Tables will showcase national dress, artefacts, and, of course,
homemade dishes—giving visitors a taste of the world on their doorstep.
