Have you ever heard of Float Zone in Reading ?

It’s a wellbeing centre based inside Hotpod yoga at Chatham Place in the town centre, they offer a number of different treatments and this week we will be looking at the infrared sauna.

The benefits of red light and infrared are all over social media at the moment, specifically the benefits with regards to aging  and to find somewhere which offers this in my home town is great, especially because it’s an experience which you can benefit from alone.

Not everyone feels comfortable in their skin and would be put off from trying a treatment like this in many of the traditional venues like gyms however, one of the USP’s of Floatzone is you have the benefit of having the treatment all to yourself.  I wore some bikini bottoms and was provided with a towel slip to be able to wear.

I had a consultation of the benefits I wanted to have from the treatment so that Darren the manager could set the appropriate program for me. This M-pulse smart therapy sauna goes much further and uses near, mid and far infrared plus redlight to provide tailored programs.

Out of the selection which included pain relief, detoxification, weight loss, improved circulation, anti-aging and skin purification. I chose stress and anxiety relief, not because I was feeling stressed or anxious, because the floatation I’d had earlier had made me very relaxed but because this setting would induce relaxation mentally via boosting the alpha/beta brainwaves during use, helping to balance the mood.

My experience was for 30 minutes. Darren lent me some over the ear headphones and helped me sync them up to my mobile, allowing me to listen to my music or podcast while inside. I left my phone outside the sauna on a bench and stepped inside. The sauna was comfortable with cushioning behind my back, and to the side of the bench I sat on. The sauna flooded the space with red light and I’d chosen to have red ceiling lights as well. Darren suggested turning the light off in the room which I’d forgotten until I was about 10 minutes into the treatment, it made such a difference so definitely remember to do that when you go and try this treatment. The heat in the sauna can be set to different strengths, so I started on a rather mild setting. The experience is different from a traditional sauna in the sense that I didn’t feel the heat intensity, I could feel a rise and then became accustomed to it. This would be a great monthly treat. An alternative sauna might be the Ozone steam pod. I’ll be sharing more about that treatment next week.
