A HIDDEN natural gem on the rooftops of Reading is set to open its doors to the public for an open day next week.
Reading International Solidarity Centre (RISC) is pulling back the curtain on its own rooftop grow project for an event in conjunction with Incredible Edible Reading.
Members of the public are invited for a tour around its forest garden, situated on the roof of the building in London Street.
The event comes as part of Incredible Edible Reading’s celebration of Good to Grow Week, which encourages community gardens to celebrate the beginning of the growing season by opening their doors to new volunteers.
For more than 20 years, RISC has used the space to grow useful plants, with everything grown there either edible, medicinal, or practical in some way, including herbs, crops, trees, and shrubs.
It is designed as an educational tool using ‘permaculture’ practises to promote sustainable growing and lifestyles.
Permaculture focuses on designing sustainable human practises in farming and settlement, as well as natural resource management and land use.
Good to Grow week takes place from Monday-Sunday, April 22-29.
