Assisting Berkshire Children to Read (ABC to Read) is an award-winning charity that supports children who are struggling to read by finding, training and supporting volunteers to work with them in primary schools around Berkshire.
They are looking for caring volunteers to become reading helpers, boosting student’s confidence and helping them directly in one-to-one sessions outside of the classroom environment to give students the opportunity to catch up.
They recruit, train and support community volunteers who ideally dedicate two sessions per week (although one session a week will also be considered), during term time only, for at least a year, reading, chatting and playing games.
Their next training session is set for July 9, from 10am to 1pm.
ABC to Read also has an employee volunteering scheme and welcome approaches from companies.
Thames Hospice have been proudly serving our community for more than 30 years.
They offer world-class palliative and end-of-life care and support to people aged 16 and over across East Berkshire and South Buckinghamshire.
Thames Hospice are excited to announce that they are opening a new superstore in Richfield Avenue in Reading.
This will serve as a retail hub for furniture, homewares, fashion, an upcycling studio with a repair workshop, a distribution centre for donated goods and a coffee shop, and a hospitality space to rent for meetings.
They are recruiting volunteers to support all those functions.
They are hoping to open the doors to the public in September, but there is plenty to do in the meantime.
For more than 30 years Reading Frontline is a charity that serves the community by providing expert help to those who are under the burden of debt, often through no fault of their own.
They specialise in offering independent, expert benefit advice, in addition to debt and budgeting advice.
Right now they have a vacancy for a Volunteer Debt and Benefit Adviser, who would work one day per week from their offices in the centre of Reading.
You will be working with clients distressed by the burden of debt, so a sympathetic and patient approach is a must. Basic finance and budgeting skills would also be helpful.
A basic knowledge of the software Word and Excel with general computer literacy and keyboard skills are needed. Full training and ongoing support will be provided to new volunteers. Back-up and support is always available as you work through clients’ problems.
