A woman who was found seriously ill in a tent in Broad Street, Reading, has died in hospital, police have confirmed.
Emergency services were called to the town centre street last week after concerns were raised for her welfare. Officers cordoned off the area around a red tent close to a bus shelter, and South Central Ambulance Service was also in attendance.
The woman, believed to have been experiencing homelessness and living in the tent, was taken to hospital in a life‑threatening condition. Police said at the time that there were no suspicious circumstances and that there was no risk to the wider public.
Local residents later placed floral tributes inside the bus shelter where she had been sleeping, with messages expressing sadness at her passing.
Thames Valley Police have been contacted for further comment on the woman’s death. The force has appealed for public sensitivity as enquiries continue and next of kin are informed.
The incident has renewed discussion locally about support for people sleeping rough in Reading, including calls from community campaigners for more permanent accommodation and services.
