With households feeling the pinch as costs rise, bargain hunters are turning to second-hand stores earlier to beat the seasonal rush to find affordable, thoughtful presents.

National pet charity Blue Cross reported an 11% uplift in charity shop sales during November and December last year, marking one of their strongest trading periods. It appears that festive shoppers are starting earlier than ever as the charity also saw a rise in sales during November, reflecting a shift in shopping habits as customers seek out early festive bargains.

As shoppers flock to charity shops to find great deals, Blue Cross has some expert advice to help find hidden treasures and enjoy the ultimate festive shopping experience.

3 Secrets to Snapping Up Charity Shop Treasures

Heidi Carter, Blue Cross Interim Retail Operations Manager, said: “Charity shopping can feel like a treasure hunt as you search for that perfect item. If you want to snap up a bargain here are my tips:

1. Speak to the shop team.

Staff and volunteers are there to help and can guide you to what you’re looking for. Also, they know what’s in the stock room, so if you can’t find what you want on the shop floor, it’s worth asking as there may be something that suits your needs.

2. Weekday mornings are the best time to shop.

A recent survey of our stores, 38%[1] of Blue Cross shop managers recommended popping in on a weekday morning, when fresh stock has just been sorted and put out.

3. Forget about sizes.

Not only do clothing sizes vary between brands, you might be a size 10 in one and a size 14 in another, but charity shops also stock a wide range of altered, handmade, and upcycled garments. It’s best to treat sizes as a guide, keep an open mind, and try things on when you can.”

Mark Corbett, Group Head of Fundraising & Retail, said: “Charity shops offer more than just bargains, they’re a lifeline for people navigating the cost-of-living crisis and are a powerful way to shop sustainably.

“It’s no surprise that shopping habits are shifting around the festive season. People are more mindful of their budgets, and by starting earlier, they give themselves more time to plan and are more likely to snap up a special bargain. Also, the increase in the popularity of Black Friday seems to encourage consumers to start thinking about gifting earlier. Remember, every second-hand gift saves money, reduces waste, and supports Blue Cross’s vital work helping pets and their people.”
