THE JOHN Sykes Foundation has announced that it has launched a new funding initiative to provide critical support for organisations supporting young people in Reading.
The new Reading Youth Foundation Fund will see £50,000 given to a number of organisations to help improve the lives of young people.
It aims to support opportunities for young people to engage in sport, arts, music and drama, team building and personal growth, which the foundation says are “vital” in shaping individuals.
The foundation has visited more than 40 community groups in the last 18 months, but says it has seen a “big gap” in the provision for the younger demographics.
It cites budget cuts and closed community centres and youth clubs as among the major issues, which it says results in some becoming associated with crime and social isolation.
Charities within five miles of Reading town centre who support young people are able to apply to the John Sykes Foundation via their website.
John Sykes said: “We are disappointed this fund is necessary, but nevertheless excited to launch the Reading Youth Fund as a way to invest in the future of Reading.
“With the lack of activities for the youth and the constant flow of social media, our vision in supporting youth focused groups is to create an environment where every young individual spends less time on screens, but rather has the chance to explore their passions, develop skills, and build lasting friendships.”
He explained: “By focusing, for example, on sports, art, music or drama, we recognise that supporting youth development has a ripple effect on the community as a whole.
“Engaged and motivated youths contribute positively to their communities, fostering a sense of belonging and pride.”
