A failed takeover bid means that Reading FC Women look set to drop out of the Women’s Championship.
The future of the women’s club is now up in the air with the club facing a decision whether to compete down the football pyramid or whether to continue the team at all.
The club has until Friday 5pm to make a decision over their future whether to compete in the fourth tier of English football or to close down the women’s team entirely.
It is believed that a separate takeover bid to fund the women’s side was submitted, but the deal has now fallen through.
The Guardian has reported that an 11th hour bid was on the table from a consortium, but that a takeover has now fallen through due to ‘uncertainty about the future ownership of the wider club’.
A petition was launched by parents and players last week to try and save the club, which gained more than 4,000 signatures.
Current vice captain Charlie Estcourt spoke out last week on BBC Berkshire about the lack of communication from the hierarchy of the club that had left players totally ‘in the dark’ about the future of the club.
