Wokingham borough council has started the planning process to install solar canopies at the Mereoak park and ride, near junction 11 of the M4.
If approved, it would generate around 1.2 million kWh of renewable electricity each year. That’s enough to power more than 440 average UK homes or charge 150,000 electric vehicles.
The proposal supports the council’s Climate Emergency Action plan, and complements other local initiatives such as the Barkham Solar Farm Project and Solar Together, which helps residents install solar panels at home through a group-buying scheme.
No decision has been made yet. As well as being subject to approval, it will only go ahead if the business case remains viable.
Wokingham borough council is working with Reading borough council to minimise disruption during any future work.
