A petrol station in Southcote is due to continue to operate 24 hours a day and sell alcohol as part of a takeover.
The Esso Spar petrol station in Berkeley Avenue is becoming an Asda as part of a nationwide expansion by the supermarket chain’s new owners.
The fuel station is on part of the ‘strategic M4 diversion route’ that runs through Reading when parts of the motorway are closed.
The owners have applied to Reading Borough Council for permission to sell alcohol at all times of the day and night. It also wants permission to trade overnight, selling food and soft drinks between 11pm and 5am.
When the shop was a Spar store, it was open 24 hours a day. A fresh application is needed due to the takeover, one of more than 100 sites across the country, including a filling station along Reading Road in Pangbourne.
A spokesperson for Asda previously said: “This conversion programme is an incredibly exciting moment for our business and accelerates our presence in the fast-growing convenience market.
“We look forward to bringing Asda’s great value in fuel and groceries to many more communities across the UK.”
Asda also has superstores in Tilehurst and Lower Earley.
Comments on the application are accepted until Friday, June 28. These are publicly accessible and can be made by emailing: licensing@reading.gov.uk
