NEARLY 1,000 men had a free prostate cancer check thanks to Reading Lions Club.
The event, held in October, is part of an annual initiative aimed at raising awareness of the disease and catching it in the early stages. It is the biggest killer of men aged 45 and over.
The Lions held the event at Circle Hospital, and welcomed 929 people for tests, taking the overall total of tests since the campaign launched 11 years ago to 10,291.
Of those, 496 needed urgent referral for investigation.
The Lions said that many were given the all-clear, but others needed life-saving treatments.
A spokesperson for the club said: “Reading Lions raises funds to provide these tests for free.
“We are proud to have founded a format for this event which has now saved many men’s lives in Reading and elsewhere in the world.
“And a big thank you to all the volunteers that joined us on the day, and our incredible partners Circle Hospital Reading, to again deliver a fabulous event.”
