A HYDROELECTRIC scheme in Reading has welcomed its 20th school visit as part of its mission to support environmental education in the borough.
Since 2021, Reading Hydro volunteers have hosted visits for local schools to bring classes along and learn more about renewable power generation and climate change.
Reading Hydro has welcomed its latest school visit, which sees volunteers at the project teaching youngsters about the environmental effects of living near to the river and the effect of human activity on aquatic life.
It was set up as a community benefit scheme which garnered 750 investors, mostly from nearby.
Now it operates a colourfully-painted building on the side of the foothpath on the weir at the Caversham Lock.
As well as generating low-carbon electricity at the site, the scheme also sees re-investment of any profits back into the local community.
One of the local teachers who visited, Mrs. Lazor, said: “The volunteers were extremely knowledgeable and friendly.
“I would highly recommend the visit to anyone wanting to delve a little deeper in the local area and its sustainable and eco-friendly projects.”
