The Reading Indian Community hosted a vibrant Dussehra celebration on Sunday, 12 October, at Theale Green School, bringing together families from across the region for an evening of culture, devotion, and celebration.
The highlight of the event was the burning of an eight-meter effigy of Ravana, symbolising the victory of good over evil as told in the epic Ramayana. The celebration also featured fireworks, traditional dance performances, and a Ramayan play performed by children, vividly portraying the story and spirit of the festival.
A special attraction of the evening was the energetic Tasha Dhol performance, with a group of 15 drum players captivating the audience with their powerful beats and infectious energy. Families enjoyed an array of Indian food stalls, cultural displays, and entertainment throughout the day, creating a festive and inclusive atmosphere.
Lead organiser Aradhana Singh said the event was a meaningful way to bring people together and celebrate shared heritage, and said: “Events like Dussehra bring our community together and remind us of the importance of unity and shared values. They also help our younger generation connect with their cultural roots and understand the traditions we hold dear.”
The organisers extended their gratitude to the event’s main sponsor, Big Bazaar, as well as to the many community volunteers whose time, effort, and enthusiasm ensured the celebration’s success.
The Reading Indian Community plans to continue hosting such cultural events to promote togetherness, celebrate diversity, and keep traditions alive within the growing South Asian community in Reading.
