A SCHOOL in Reading has marked a milestone as it celebrates more than a century of education.
Queen Anne’s School, Caversham, commemorated 130 years of teaching in the community with a week full of events to coincide with National Boarding Week.
The school brought a unique theme to the activities planned for each day, including its Get Outdoors for Summer Solstice.
It marked the longest day of the year by enjoying the sunshine, where they took a commemorative photograph on the school field, as well as taking part in games such as capture the flag.
Pupils also took on step challenges in house teams, quizzes, and end of year parties with fellow house members.
Queen Anne’s was founded as part of the Grey Coat Hospital Foundation in 1698, when eight merchants in Westminster.
The site, previously occupied by Amersham Hall School, was bought by the foundation and turned into Queen Anne’s School in 1894, named in honour of the monarch who granted them a royal charter in the early 1700s.
Through its 130 years, the school has produced alumni including Tamara Taylor, captain of England women’s Rugby 2015 Six Nations team; Janet Chisholm, an MI6 agent during the Cold War; Olympic rower Olivia Carnegie-Brown; writer and illustrator Posy Simmonds; actress Jenny Seagrove; and producer and director Margaret Webster.
The Grey Coat Hospital Foundation itself dates back to the 1570s, since when the charity has fostered collaboration between educational organisations and pupils.
