SONDHEIM’S dark and witty classic brought to life familiar Grimm fairy tale characters for audiences at a Reading private school.

Senior students of Leighton Park School performed the show which combines the stories of several famous fairy tail characters.

The bi-annual senior production by pupils from Year 10 to Upper Sixth showcased the school’s talent, bringing actors, singers and dancers together.

There were plenty of roles, too, for tech crew, costumes, make-up and orchestral musicians.

People lucky enough to get tickets for the four-night run said: “What a show it was.

“Such a fantastic production, everyone gave 150%, and it was a joy to watch.”

Jessica Wittert van Hoogland, director of drama at Leighton Park, said: “Despite the fact that the script is based on fairytale characters, it is actually very complex so it’s been a challenging piece to bring to the stage.

“The progress that the cast has made since September is just brilliant.

“I am incredibly proud of all of the students who’ve worked with so much determination, energy and joy to take this from the page to the stage.”

Max, a year 10 student, played Jack.

He said: “This is my first year with older students and I’ve learned so much from them.

“It’s quite demanding on the music and quite demanding on the cast but it is so much fun taking part.”

Oscar, an Upper Sixth student, and one of the princes, agreed: “It’s great fun being part of the show.

“With A Levels there is a lot of work to do so just having a few hours in the week to go into the world that we’ve made on stage is nice.”

Leighton Park offers a values-led education focussed on pupil personal development and future readiness.

Scholarships in Drama, Music and Dance, worth up to 30% off the day fee, are available for exceptional candidates.
