Students at Activate Learning’s Reading College and University Centre are celebrating after collecting their GCSE exam results.

451 students achieved a grade 9-4 in their GCSE maths and English.

Overall, 1561 learners across the Activate Learning group of colleges in Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Surrey and our online provision achieved a grade 9-4 today.

Many of the college’s GCSE students are learners who resit maths, English or both, to continue in education or progress their career.

This includes mature students who need these GCSEs to progress in the workplace, learners who may have missed the chance to go to university and want to study at degree level, alongside part-time students who have studied GCSEs in evening classes.

Hannah O’Neill, Group Director of Academic Studies Faculty at Activate Learning, said: “I’m so proud of our learners. Today’s results reflect their determination, hard work and effort and the support of fantastic teaching teams.

“Many students getting their results today have taken English and maths alongside full-time programmes as they resit their GCSEs, while others have returned to secure the grades they need to take up new opportunities while juggling work and home commitments.

Every student has been on their own journey and they should all feel proud of their achievements.

“Further education colleges such as Reading College and University Centre, exist for moments like this. We help people of all ages gain the qualifications and confidence to move forward, whether that’s into higher education, apprenticeships or straight into

work.

“I would like to thank all our amazing staff and our students’ families for their encouragement at every stage. I hope that these results will lead to lots of amazing opportunities for our learners and wish them all the best for the future.”

Gabriela Ammirati, 18 from Reading, achieved a grade 8 in GCSE English and a grade 5 in GCSE maths, both of which they were resitting this year alongside their Level 1 Music studies, in which they achieved a Distinction.

Gabi said: “I did better than I thought I would, so I’m very happy. I redid my GCSEs as I moved here from another country.

“I’m hoping to move on to do A Levels in maths, psychology and art next, and having my GCSEs will open that door for me.”

Harry Boother, 17, resat his GCSEs this year and achieved a grade 4 in English. He said: “I did a lot better than I did last year. The fact that I got a 4 in English, I’m over the moon!”

“I have been on the Foundation Catering Pathway, and my results will now allow me to progress onto the Professional Culinary Arts course, which I’m really excited about.”

Sophia Kiernan, 17, studied the GCSE STEP: STEM Pathway this year, and achieved a grade 6 in GCSE maths, a grade 5 in GCSE English, a grade 5 in GCSE Statistics: Science and a grade 7/6 in GCSE Combined Science.

Sophia said: “I’m really pleased with the grades I got. I did better than I thought I would, specifically in maths, so I’m happy with that. I worked really hard and I’m glad that I can now go on to do my A Levels next year.”

Reading College and University Centre offers part-time GCSEs in English and maths.

If a person doesn’t have the results they think they could have achieved, Reading College and University Centre offers one-year, full-time programmes for 16-19-year-olds who want to improve their GCSE grades.
