Small businesses and sole traders in Reading are being encouraged to take part in a series of free cyber-safety workshops designed to help them strengthen their defences against online crime.
The sessions, organised by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for Thames Valley and the South East Cyber Crime Unit, will offer practical guidance from Police Cyber Protect Officers and industry cyber-security volunteers.
Organisers say the events will focus on the simple vulnerabilities criminals often exploit, as well as steps business owners can take immediately to reduce the risk.
Cybercrime has become an increasing threat to smaller firms, which are often seen as easier targets due to limited security measures. Incidents can halt trading, damage reputations and lead to significant financial losses.
Thames Valley’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Matthew Barber, said the workshops were designed to show just how easily attackers can gain access to business accounts.
“One weak password or missing layer of protection can set off a chain of compromise that stops your business in its tracks,” he said. “These are practical, hands-on sessions that will help attendees understand where their businesses are most exposed and give them tools to protect their livelihoods.”
Participants will receive support in securing key accounts and improving their overall cyber-resilience using trusted national tools. Attendees will also leave with an action plan and step-by-step advice to apply after the event.
The workshops will take place on 28 November 2025 at the Loddon Room, Select Car Leasing Stadium, Reading (RG2 0FL). Registration is required due to limited capacity, with separate Eventbrite sign-ups for sole traders and small businesses.
