Former Reading FC and Real Madrid footballer Royston Drenthe was rushed to hospital on Friday after he suffered a stroke.
The 38-year-old fell ill on Friday and was taken taken to hospital where he is being treated.
A statement from his current team FC De Rebellen said: ““Last Friday, Royston Drenthe suffered a stroke.
“Drenthe is currently being taken good care of and is in good hands. The team and those involved are hoping for a smooth recovery.
“Royston’s family is asking for peace and privacy during this period so they can provide him with the support and space he needs for his recovery.”
Reading Football Club tweeted: “Everyone at Reading Football Club wishes former Royal Royston Drenthe a speedy recovery after he was taken ill on Friday. Get well soon Royston.”
Drenthe was one tipped for stardom having joined Real Madrid from Feyenoord in 2005.
However, after a consistent five-year spell in Madrid which included loan spells at Hercules and Everton, he eventually joined Reading in 2013.
He played 23 times for the Royals and netted two goals in the Championship, but was sent out on loan to Sheffield Wednesday the following year and then departed the club.
