As the nights draw in and the temperature drops, Reading begins its annual transformation into a town glowing with festive colour. From markets to museums, skating to seasonal entertainment, there’s plenty to bring out the Christmas spirit. Here are the top five festive things to do in Reading this winter.

1. Glide Around the Ice Rink at Reading Winter Wonderland

Hills Meadow once again hosts Reading Winter Wonderland, where the undercover real-ice rink takes centre stage. Families and groups can enjoy skating sessions throughout the season, while festive food stalls, fairground rides and Santa’s Grotto add to the atmosphere. With wristbands and pay-as-you-go options, it’s a flexible outing suitable for all ages.

2. Browse the Reading Museum & Town Hall Christmas Market

Held inside one of Reading’s most charming historic buildings, the Christmas market at the Town Hall brings together more than two dozen local makers, artisans and producers. From handmade gifts to festive treats, it’s an ideal stop for thoughtful Christmas shopping. The museum’s own shop and café also join in with seasonal offers and cosy refreshments.

3. Experience Festive Magic on Broad Street

Reading’s main shopping street turns into a hub of activity in the run-up to Christmas, with free weekend entertainment ranging from stilt-walkers to candy-cane characters and roaming performers. The lights, music and bustle make it a perfect place for an early-evening stroll, and seasonal street markets often pop up along the way.

4. Enjoy Festive Family Activities at Reading Museum

Throughout December, Reading Museum runs a seasonal family trail inviting children to help a mischievous elf complete his Christmas feast. Alongside the trail, families can explore craft activities, story-time sessions and hands-on exhibits. It’s an indoor option that blends learning with Christmas cheer — an especially welcome choice on a rainy day.

5. Warm Up With Festive Films and Shows at The Hexagon

The Hexagon’s winter programme offers an inviting mix of live performances, carol concerts and festive screenings. With events suited to children, families and adults alike, the venue provides an atmospheric escape from the cold — and a welcome dose of seasonal entertainment.
