Supermarket giant Sainsbury’s has opened its third store to serve busy shoppers in Reading town centre.

The new Sainsbury’s Local opened in Station Road, the well-trodden street between the train station and Friar Street at around 7am today (Thursday, January 30).

The convenience-style store is the third Sainsbury’s in the town centre, with the other shops in Friar Street and Broad Street.

Celebrating the opening, a spokesperson for the grocery giant said: “We’re passionate about delicious food and we want to make it easier for customers to access it wherever we can, so we’re delighted to confirm our plans for a new Sainsbury’s Local on Station Road.

“We hope our investment in Reading, creating jobs and a convenient new place for people to shop locally, will be a welcome addition to the community that will benefit customers for years to come.”

Station Road is one of the busiest streets in Reading, as pedestrians make their way between the train station and the rest of the town centre.

Sainsbury’s won planning permission for advertising, an ATM and anti-ram raid bollards from Reading Borough Council in August last year.

The company also won consent to sell alcohol from 7am to 11pm daily from the council’s licensing department after no objections were received.

The unit Sainsbury’s Local has taken over in the Brunel House building was previously occupied by the Royal Bank of Scotland, which has been closed for years.
