READING FC WOMEN picked up their first victory of their Women’s Championship campaign after Freya Gregory’s opener was followed up by Amelia Elwood’s late second.

After a goalless first-half, the Royals ensured that they won for the first time under new boss Liam Gilbert by opening the score after an hour before they sealed the points in stoppage time.

The result means that Reading climb up into sixth position after their first five matches.

Searching for their first win of the season, Liam Gilbert handed a first start to Freya Gregory, while midfielder Tia Primmer also returned to the side.

The visitors put pressure on with a series of corners in quick succession, one of which almost fell at the back post for Brooke Hendrix before Durham cleared up the danger.

Durham then regrouped quickly to prevent the Royals from breaking through with three on the attack waiting to pounce.

Reading continued to persist throughout the half and were on top for large portions.

Josie Longhusrt came close when Primmer’s ball into the box was met by the stretching Longhurst who almost found the corner.

The teams went in locked at 0-0 at the break.

On the hour mark, the Royals broke the deadlock to go in front.

Halle Houssein picked out Gregory on the left and she blasted the ball past Naoisha McAloon to net her first goal for the club.

The Royals made sure of the victory late in the day when Elwood doubled Reading’s advantage.

Reading are back at home next weekend when they host Lewews at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.
